What might a successful corporate away-day include if you want real results, not just fun?

Organisations often want their away-days to feel energising. The challenge is to deliver an energising experience that also produces lasting behavioural change. From MDA Training’s experience across many industries, the away-days that create actual results share four essentials: They set clear objectives, use immersive simulations, encourage cross team collaboration, and invest in strong follow-up.

A recent HR away-day demonstrated the impact of this approach. The attendees worked in small groups to create short films that brought their vision and strategy to life. It felt enjoyable, and more importantly it created shared understanding, practical insights and a sense of collective purpose that carried into daily work.

The four essentials of a results-driven away-day

1. Clear objectives that shape the entire experience

“Clarity creates momentum. It helps people see why the day matters and how it connects with their goals.”

Away-days often begin with enthusiasm but sometimes lack clarity of purpose. Research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development shows that learning experiences deliver stronger outcomes when they are linked to specific organisational priorities (CIPD Learning at Work 2023). Participants feel more focused and more confident applying what they explore.

Clarity does not restrict creativity. It creates a shared foundation, so everyone understands why they are together and what success looks like.

2. Immersive simulations that mirror workplace realities

People learn more effectively when they can test ideas and behaviours in a setting that reflects their actual working context. Workplace simulation techniques have been shown to build capability more reliably than discussion alone (Association for Talent Development 2022).

This is why film making, scenario design or commercial challenges work so well. They create emotional involvement, which strengthens memory and encourages practical application. In the HR away-day example, teams interpreted the strategy through narrative and visual storytelling. This deepened understanding far more than a presentation ever could.

3. Cross-team collaboration that strengthens relationships

“Collaboration grows when people work together on something meaningful and enjoyable.”

A successful away-day brings people together in ways that do not always happen inside normal routines. Research from Deloitte indicates that organisations with strong cross-team collaboration report higher performance and faster decision making (Deloitte Human Capital Trends 2021).

Activities that encourage mixed groups, combined problem solving or shared creative tasks enable people to see each other’s strengths. The HR film activity did exactly this. Collaborators who rarely worked together discovered new insight into how colleagues think and communicate. Moments like these create the trust that underpins future collaboration.

4. Strong follow-up that links the away-day to long term change

Follow-up is the bridge between inspiration and implementation.”

The most important element is often the one that receives the least attention. Without thoughtful follow-up, even an excellent experience fails to have lasting impact. The Centre for Creative Leadership notes that reinforcement activities improve the likelihood that learning turns into new behaviour (Centre for Creative Leadership 2020, older than five years).

Follow-up can take many forms. These include reflection sessions, team check-ins, learning clinics, and refreshed goals. In the HR example, departments later revisited their films to discuss what the strategy meant for daily practice. This reinforced shared ownership and helped teams turn insight into actions.

Practical ways to bring these essentials to life

  • Begin with a clear question or challenge that connects directly to organisational needs.
  • Use immersive activities that allow people to explore ideas through practical action.
  • Build mixed groups to strengthen cross-team relationships.
  • Schedule a structured follow-up process before the away-day takes place.

What’s next?

A successful away-day is more than a change of scenery. It is a purposeful learning experience that builds alignment, capability and confidence. When organisations set clear objectives, use immersive simulations, encourage cross team collaboration and follow through with strong reinforcement, they create days that feel enjoyable and drive actual results.

MDA Training supports organisations to design away-days that combine creativity with strong learning principles. If you would like support shaping your next event, we would be delighted to help.
