Commercial risk simulation ?>

The project

A major regional agricultural organisation wanted to strengthen risk management and commercial decision-making capabilities across its senior management population as part of a wider leadership conference.

Operating in a volatile market shaped by fluctuating commodity prices, rising costs, supply chain pressures and changing customer demands, the organisation recognised the need for leaders to balance commercial ambition with effective risk management.

The challenge was to create an engaging, experiential learning experience that would encourage senior managers to think commercially, assess risk and understand the wider financial and strategic implications of their decisions.

The solution

We designed a one-day, team-based Business Simulation comprising two rounds, placing senior managers in charge of a simulated agricultural business operating in a competitive and unpredictable marketplace.

In the first round, teams developed a commercial strategy for a new agricultural business, evaluating market opportunities, investment priorities, financial implications and potential risks. They were challenged to allocate resources, manage uncertainty and balance growth ambitions with commercial sustainability.

In the second round, participants took responsibility for an established business facing changing market conditions, operational pressures and emerging risks. Teams had to adapt their strategies, protect profitability and balance short-term performance with long-term resilience.

Throughout the simulation, experienced facilitators challenged participants to evaluate risk and reward, explain their commercial rationale and consider the financial consequences of their decisions. Structured feedback and reflection encouraged teams to learn from their performance and refine their approach.

The experience brought risk management and commerciality to life through realistic, high-pressure decision-making.

The impact

The simulation provided a highly engaging centrepiece for the leadership conference, strengthening participants’ understanding of the relationship between commercial decisions, financial performance and risk.

Senior managers developed greater confidence in assessing commercial opportunities, managing uncertainty and making informed decisions under pressure.

The collaborative experience encouraged an enterprise-wide perspective, highlighting how decisions across different functions influence profitability, risk exposure and organisational resilience.

By combining practical experience with facilitated reflection, the programme reinforced commercial accountability, proactive risk management and the leadership judgement needed to drive sustainable business performance.
