The project

A leading global organisation wanted to strengthen commercial acumen across its management population, helping managers develop a broader understanding of how the business operates and creates value.

While managers had strong functional expertise, there were varying levels of financial understanding and commercial awareness. The organisation wanted to build greater confidence in interpreting financial information, evaluating commercial opportunities and understanding how everyday decisions impact profitability, cash flow and overall business performance.

The challenge was to create an engaging, practical learning experience that would encourage managers to think beyond their individual responsibilities, balance competing commercial priorities and make informed decisions while managing risk and uncertainty.

The solution

We designed a one-day immersive Commercial Simulation, placing managers in charge of a simulated business operating in a competitive and changing marketplace.

Working in teams, participants were challenged to make a series of interconnected commercial decisions involving pricing, investment, resource allocation, cost management and business growth. Each decision influenced financial performance, requiring managers to interpret business information, assess commercial risks and balance short-term results with long-term sustainability.

Throughout the experience, participants explored the key drivers of revenue, profitability and cash flow, gaining practical insight into how different business functions contribute to overall performance.

Between simulation rounds, facilitated reviews enabled teams to analyse their results, reflect on the consequences of their decisions and adapt their strategies. This iterative approach encouraged collaboration, commercial thinking and a greater understanding of the relationship between risk, reward and business performance.

The impact

The simulation provided managers with a deeper understanding of how businesses create value and how their decisions influence financial and commercial outcomes.

Participants developed greater confidence in interpreting financial information, evaluating commercial trade-offs and making decisions that balance growth, profitability and risk. The experience also strengthened cross-functional collaboration, encouraging managers to adopt a broader, enterprise-wide perspective.

By connecting commercial concepts to realistic business challenges, the programme helped managers translate financial insight into practical decision-making, supporting a stronger commercial mindset and greater accountability for business performance.
