The project

A leading global organisation wanted to strengthen the commercial awareness and business understanding of its early careers talent. While apprentices and graduates were developing strong technical and functional skills, many had limited exposure to the wider commercial environment and the financial drivers of business performance.

The organisation wanted to accelerate their understanding of how different business functions work together, how businesses generate revenue and profit, and how everyday decisions influence customers, costs, cash flow and overall performance.

The challenge was to create an engaging, experiential learning experience that would make commercial and financial concepts accessible, build confidence in business decision-making and encourage participants to think beyond their individual roles.

The solution

We designed an immersive Business Simulation that placed apprentices and graduates in charge of a simulated business, providing a practical introduction to the commercial realities of running an organisation.

Working in teams, participants made a series of interconnected business decisions involving pricing, sales, investment, resource allocation and cost management. Each decision influenced business performance, helping participants understand the relationships between revenue, costs, profitability, cash flow and customer outcomes.

The simulation introduced participants to the importance of managing commercial risks, balancing competing priorities and understanding the trade-offs involved in business decision-making. As the business environment evolved, teams were challenged to respond to changing market conditions, assess opportunities and adapt their strategies.

Between simulation rounds, facilitated reviews encouraged participants to analyse financial results, reflect on their decisions and identify opportunities to improve performance. This practical, collaborative approach helped bring commercial concepts to life while strengthening teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills.

The impact

The simulation helped apprentices and graduates develop a stronger understanding of how businesses operate, create value and measure success.

Participants gained confidence in interpreting financial information, understanding key commercial drivers and recognising how decisions across different functions influence overall business performance. The experience also strengthened their awareness of commercial risk, the importance of collaboration and the need to balance short-term priorities with long-term objectives.

By connecting business concepts to realistic decisions and measurable outcomes, the programme helped early careers talent develop a broader commercial mindset, greater business confidence and a stronger foundation for their future development within the organisation.
