How our Managing Change Activity works…
Teams are briefed on a brand-new platform and operational system, along with a clear customer brief and commercial objectives. Their challenge is to design and build a physical structure capable of transporting a product (a ball) across a defined arena – maximising journey time and overall performance.
Working within tight constraints, budgets, and time pressures, teams must scope all system and operational requirements, allocate roles, manage risk, and build a delivery model capable of processing products for Customer A ahead of the project going live. They are set a range of performance targets including:
- Cost control
- Productivity
- Risk management
- Revenue and profit.
This phase mirrors real-world project mobilisation: planning under pressure, balancing trade-offs, and aligning delivery with commercial goals.
Just as teams settle into their plan, the market shifts.
Partway through R&D, customer requirements and market dynamics change. Two new customer markets – Customer B and Customer C – suddenly open up. Teams must now reassess their assumptions, revisit their strategy, and redesign their operating model. Competition quickly gives way to collaboration as success now depends on:
- Cross-team coordination
- Shared solutions and resources
- Smarter commercial decision-making.
Teams must evaluate all viable options and decide whether to serve Customer A only, pivot to B or C, or attempt to deliver across all three – while still hitting their financial and operational targets.
Leadership, adaptability, and commercial judgement are put to the test as teams respond to uncertainty and complexity in real time.
The projects go live.
Teams now have a set time to execute their operational plans and deliver. Performance is tracked live, with:
- Financial penalties for failed products
- Higher costs for late changes
- Real-time management information feeding into a central industry dashboard.
Teams must balance speed, accuracy, quality, and cost – just like a real business under pressure. Once time is up, facilitators run an industry-wide results session. Teams review performance, share learning, and reflect on:
- Leadership behaviours
- Decision-making under uncertainty
- Collaboration vs competition
- Managing risk, cost, and change.
The experience concludes with a structured debrief, directly linking behaviours and outcomes back to real-world change leadership and organisational transformation.
