Why interpersonal skills are essential for management development in manufacturing

Developing people skills to a professional standard is critical to enable managers in manufacturing to be able to carry out their practical responsibilities effectively to meet customer expectations. It is also essential that managers possess the interpersonal skills to be able to manage their workforce appropriately to maintain a healthy work environment.

By taking the time to work on interpersonal management development skills as part of manufacturing workplace training, leaders will be able to maintain business standards by creating an open and transparent communication network throughout the company that will aid progression.

Being at your best

If a manager is fully-focused and engaged with their role and working as efficiently as possible, individual and corporate productivity is likely to improve. A study revealed that managers account for at least 70% of the variance in employee engagement, meaning that developing the interpersonal skills to engage with a workforce is critical for productivity.

By implementing a manufacturing workplace training strategy that encourages managers to be organised, resilient and authentic in their working methods, the entire workforce is more likely to engage in their positions and work more productively.

Communicating with impact

As managers in manufacturing are responsible for making critical decisions that ultimately impact whether or not operational excellence will be achieved, being able to present relevant information, ideas and visions are vital to employee engagement and customer satisfaction. By creating an open form of communication, employees are also more likely to feel valued by having their ideas and opinions heard, thus boosting morale.

Spending time working on these skills as part of management development will ensure that managers have a long term plan in place to enable them to handle workplace communications effectively.

Coaching and mentoring

Being able to coach and mentor new hires as well as existing members of staff should be a priority for managers. If a workforce does not have the right guidance in their day-to-day roles, problems can easily arise which can lead to a reduction in the quality of operations.

By working on improved methods to inspire and motivate employees through effective questioning, listening and communication, managers will be able to develop their workforce to work in line with business goals and KPIs.

As the manufacturing industry relies on team development to achieve success, the need for adequate management is key. By structuring manufacturing workplace training to allow managers to become better leaders by improving people skills, long term success becomes more realistic.
